7/1/2023 0 Comments Darkwood beach antigua![]() Our taxi driver was waiting for us at 2pm as arranged but I noticed that they are very flexible as one of our group asked if they could stay another hour which the driver agreed to. The beach never got crowded and it was a really lovely relaxing time. There is free WiFi available on the beach and it was very fast. I am not a strong swimmer so like to stay in my depth but there were 2 quite steep drops so beware of this and also the waves can be quite rough and I got swamped by one which terrified me and I made a hasty retreat back to the safety of my sunbed. Now the sea here is lovely and looks very inviting but be warned it gave me a very frightening experience. Fantastic beach, soft white sand, tremendous views and calm waters and great mix of resort and public beach. We paid $20 for 2 sun beds and an umbrella - the umbrella was the wooden type so could not be adjusted any way but I managed to stay in the shade by moving the sunbed around it! We had a few very sharp showers but it did not spoil the day and we just went into the beach bar and had coffee for $3 each. This is a beautiful place with soft sand, a beach bar and toilets (which were just about ok). It was about 20 minutes drive through lovely countryside and then we were dropped off right at the entrance to the beach. We all then agreed a time of 2pm for our ride back to the ship. The fare was $8 pp one way so in total for the 2 of us it was $32 for the round trip. View of Darkwood Beach and Darkwood Salt Pond in Antigua and Barbuda. Straight off the ship there are loads of people offering trips and taxi services and we soon sorted out a taxi you then wait a few minutes until there are enough numbers - about 20 I think - to fill the taxi. It's too bad my memory of is is tainted by our experience at the rest & bar.We arrived in Antigua by cruise ship (Azura) and though we have been here many times before we had never done a beach so decided to go to Darkwood Beach. While that really pissed me off, this review is of the beach itself. And we were probably the only people who ordered local food and not fries and hamburgers. It took us an hour to get anything to eat and we reminded them twice our order was in. In summary, don't hold your breath for the food. The water was shockingly cold for the midday and I missed warm Caribbean breezes. And we didn't invade the personal space of any other sunbather. On Darkwood beach we were really able to find a spot on our own, not bothered by anyone else trying to sell us something. I don't know how true that is but given the size of the island I imagine many are short stretches of almost untouched white sand and clear blue water like this one. Antigua boasts having 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. My husband and I were staying at an all inclusive resort for our vacation but in search of a beach that wasn't extremely tourist ridden I found this beauty via trip advisor. ![]()
